duran_who we are

If you are like most people you will think of rows of machines and banks of cardio equipment. Workouts are comprised of structured sets on a series of machines. The machines bear the majority of the load, setting an artificial line of action, forcing your body to follow its path. People sit on stationary bicycles, reading a magazine and getting in their 30 minutes of “cardio” before their strength training. Throughout these gyms there are a multitude of places to either sit down, or lay down to workout. There is no creativity, no variance, only a structured environment for the masses.

Is this an effective way to train?

Step outside the modern commercial gym facility, and all of the movements will look out of place. When will you be afforded the opportunity to sit down or lay down to productively apply the strength you have gained using machines? How will your body respond when you have to lift something overhead while standing, instead of comfortably seated? What will happen when your body must set the line of action instead of a machine? What if the “cardio” doesn't come first?

Our definition of fitness is the ability to perform at any and all physical tasks, even unknown tasks. Fitness is not defined inside the walls of a gym; it is defined each and every day by your ability to deal with the challenges of life.

We believe that the movements and exercises used in training should look normal outside of the training environment. We train using movements that pre-date the modern gym facility and philosophy. Long before Gold’s Gym our ancestors were squatting, running, jumping, pulling, pushing, climbing and throwing. By training with these movements, we are “reconditioning” our bodies to function in a manner that they were designed. We intentionally blur the line between strength training and cardio training, just as nature does.

CrossFit Aurora is located on Argyll Rd, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. We offer group instruction and personal training. The backgrounds of our clients are diverse, but their fitness needs differ only by degree, not kind. We train students, military personnel, police officers, housewives, and grandparents.

Some of our clients are training for functional dominance; others are training for functional competence. All of our clients train using the same functional movements- scaling the load and intensity for individual ability, preserving the stimulus of training.

Take a look at the video from CrossFit Headquarters below....it starts with a tongue-in-cheek comparison of what CrossFit is not!

"Why we're different"

A regular gym has mirrors – We have trainers coaching you on your form.  (ok...we do have two mirrors...)
  • They have bicep curls and cable-crossover machines – We have squats and deadlifts that you'll actually use in life.
  • They have cardio machines telling you you’re going too fast – We have trainers telling you to speed up.
  • They train for looks – We train for life.
  • They sell you a membership and hope you only come for one month – We want you to train with us every day we’re open.
  • They have a 20 minute workout in 2 hours – We have a 2 hour workout in 20 minutes.

"What is CrossFit Aurora

CrossFit Aurora is not your ordinary gym.  We don't have acres of shiny isolation exercise equipment, thousands of dollars worth of treadmills and elliptical machines (complete with their LCD screens or magazine racks), wall-to-wall mirrors, or a smoothie bar.

What we do offer is the most effective workout program possible.  We are serious about real fitness.  Our equipment is simple, extremely functional, and has application to daily life regardless of your occupation.  Furthermore, our workouts typically last less than 25 minutes and are exceedingly more effective than spending hours doing isolation movements or trudging away on a treadmill.  In fact, you will typically warm up, workout, cool down, and be on your way in less than 60 minutes! In as few as 2 sessions per week, you will quickly observe significant and quantifiable results in your fitness levels - even if you thought you were in 'good shape' when you started!

We understand you may feel intimidated about training with us - don't worry!  Even though the WOD may look difficult or nearly impossible to the mere mortal, every workout will be scaled to your abilities.  We all have a starting place.  If you have any questions or concerns, our staff is specially trained to help you properly and safely scale your workout.  We promise those of you that are saying, "I could never do that!" will soon be saying, "I can't believe I just did that!"

CrossFit training is hard - we won't water it down.  You will be physically and mentally challenged each and every time you step through the door.  However, your biggest obstacle is not our WOD, it is your motivation.  The most difficult step is the first one.  All you need to do is pay us a visit and we'll take it from there!  True fitness requires more than a new gym membership - it is a change in lifestyle.  We're ready to help you get started - are you?

What You Can Expect

When you come into CrossFit Aurora, expect to be greeted with a smile by a trainer and introduced to many strangers who might be 1) lying on the floor after a workout 2) smiling and getting ready to start the WoD or 3) coming up to you and genuinely introducing themselves.

We practice constantly varied, functional fitness executed at a high-intensity. This means that the workouts will be different every single day you come in, the movements will be applicable and consistent to daily physical demands, and we will be focusing on achieving the highest possible power output.

Every workout posted is custom tailored to each individual athlete.  We all complete the same workout, yet the number of repetitions, weight used, or length of workout may be slightly edited.  You will be completing the workouts that you see posted on this website every day, but the manner in which they are completed vary among members.  A great goal for any athlete is to work towards completing one, a few, or all of the workouts "as prescribed".

Our workouts typically last between 2 minutes and an hour (and yes, there are workouts that will leave you floored in only two minutes.) with the average workout time being about 15 minutes. The time will be constantly varied as will the movements and structure of the workout. You will not see the same Workout of the Day for quite some time.

Why CrossFit?

Because it's invigorating, it's fun, and best of all, it works!  How many hours have you wasted blasting away at your biceps, running on the treadmill, and "adding 2.5's" to your  bench press to mark a new PR?  Fitness based solely on doing the same old repetitive thing over and over again is dead.  CrossFit will get you into better shape faster and you will be having an absolute blast doing it!  You will meet new people and develop lasting friendships with CFT members as you drag your body through each WOD.  High-fives and smiles are very common between athletes lying on the floor after a WOD.  Come experience the revolution for yourself!  Come get CrossFit!
